Scripture Lesson: Psalm 24:7-10

The psalmist is inviting all of God’s people to welcome their King with joy when he comes. Today, Jesus now comes in glory through the gospel, and we welcome him with joy when we receive the Word in faith. Jesus will return on Judgment Day with the angels to gather all believers so that all of us can welcome him with a royal welcome that will last forever.

He Will Be Called

Jesus Is Our Champion

  1. Our Champion is qualified.

  1. Because he is like us.

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. - Isaiah 9:6

But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, - Galatians 4:4

  1. Because he is unlike us.

Remember the former things, those of long ago; I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me. - Isaiah 46:9

For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. - Hebrews 4:15

  1. Our Champion is strong.

say to those with fearful hearts, “Be strong, do not fear; your God will come, he will come with vengeance; with divine retribution he will come to save you.”- Isaiah 35:4

Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle. - Psalm 24:8

For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength. - 1 Corinthians 1:25

  1. Our Champion is victorious.

Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. The Lord, the Lord himself, is my strength and my defense; he has become my salvation.”                  - Isaiah 12:2

But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.                                   - 1 Corinthians 15:57

“Look, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done. 13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. - Revelation 22:12-13

Points to Ponder

  1. Evaluate this statement - “The many commercial and ornamental lights of Christmas cannot dispel the deep shadow cast across our nation and our own consciences by sin.  We need a hero, a champion, who can brighten our lives long after artificial Christmas lighting has been taken down.” (Wayne Mueller – retired WELS Pastor)

  1. Why do we so need the champion that God pictured through Isaiah at this time of year? Over the 2 weeks how will you get focused in on what Christmas is about - the arrival of our Mighty God in Bethlehem?
